Exmoor provides expansive heathland and wooded valleys, ideal locations for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. The starkness of Dartmoor and its granite tors offer additional opportunities for bouldering and climbing, and access to private woodland enables our archery and bushcraft sessions in Somerset.
Mountain Biking & Cycling
Cycling offers clear physical health benefits, but it also provides a powerful emotional experience. Riding along a forest trail or across open moorland can create a sense of freedom, independence, and discovery. Exploring new places by bike often brings a strong feeling of achievement that should not be underestimated.
Research by Edinburgh Napier University has highlighted the benefits of mountain biking for mental wellbeing, whether it’s on cross-country trails, downhill or through bike-packing trail adventures over multiple days. The study by the Scottish university is based on a Trail Therapy program that has been running for a year by the Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland team. The project is aimed to share the joys and obtainable challenges of mountain biking, designed to help riders grow in confidence, improve social interactions, establish skills of self-regulation, and accelerate their road to mental health wellbeing.
There is a positive link between cycling, cognitive function, and mental wellbeing for both children and adults and it also provides an excellent opportunity for families to spend time together, outdoors. Mountain biking connects us with nature in a unique way, combining physical challenges, positive risk-taking, skills development and unique opportunities for therapeutic experiences in nature.
Where riding a traditional bike may not be possible, we can provide alternative options such as trikes or recumbent cycles, offering greater stability and accessibility so that more people can take part with confidence.
Hiking
Hiking offers time for quiet reflection and relaxation, surrounded by nature and fully engaging the senses. Even in less favourable weather conditions—when safe to do so—it can be a deeply rewarding experience.
A good hike often leaves us feeling physically tired yet mentally refreshed, better equipped to return to everyday life. The sense of accomplishment can be uplifting and positively influence overall outlook.
Research suggests that hiking provides benefits beyond cardiovascular health. Studies have indicated improvements in antioxidative capacity, which supports the body in fighting disease, while other research has shown that brisk walking can be an effective intervention for depression, with comparable benefits to more vigorous exercise.
Where accessibility is a challenge, we can provide specialist equipment such as all-terrain wheelchairs, enabling participants to enjoy off-road trails with support.

Horse Riding
Horse riding supports posture, balance, and coordination, while also offering significant emotional and therapeutic benefits. Working with a horse requires focus, patience, and trust, helping riders to develop emotional control and confidence.
Equine-assisted therapy can be particularly beneficial for individuals who may find it difficult to express themselves. The connection with the animal, combined with the sense of achievement, can have a powerful impact on self-esteem.
Sessions may also include grooming and preparing the horse, providing a calming, hands-on experience that can be especially helpful for those experiencing anxiety or emotional distress.
Archery
Archery is an inclusive activity suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities, including individuals with physical disabilities through the use of adaptive equipment.
It can be enjoyed one-to-one or in a group setting, where friendly competition can build confidence, resilience, and the ability to manage both success and disappointment. Archery encourages focus, coordination, and controlled breathing, with measurable progress that can translate into everyday life skills.
Physically, it helps to strengthen key muscle groups in the upper body, including the arms, shoulders, chest, and core, through the repeated action of drawing and releasing the bow.
Nordic Walking
Originally developed as a training method for cross-country skiers, Nordic walking uses specially designed poles to engage the upper body, turning a simple walk into a full-body workout.
It is low-impact, gentle on the joints, and suitable for all ages. The use of poles can reduce strain on the knees and lower body while improving balance and stability.
Research has shown that Nordic walking can increase calorie burn and heart rate compared to regular walking. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals with joint conditions or those recovering from events such as a stroke, supporting rehabilitation by improving posture, gait, and overall strength.
Sessions can be delivered individually or in groups, with many participants enjoying the added social interaction.

Bushcraft
Bushcraft offers an opportunity to reconnect with nature and step away from the pressures of everyday life. It provides a calming environment for those experiencing anxiety, social isolation, or the challenges of physical or mental health conditions.
Activities may include shelter building, fire lighting, foraging, and animal tracking, encouraging participants to engage with the natural environment in a meaningful way. These simple yet immersive experiences can help clear the mind, reduce stress, and promote a sense of calm.
We are committed to environmental responsibility and follow a strict “leave no trace” approach. In line with our animal welfare policy, our bushcraft sessions do not include fishing or hunting.
Ridge Scrambling
Ridge scrambling is an exciting and rewarding activity that combines adventure with learning. It works particularly well in small groups, encouraging teamwork, communication, and mutual support.
Participants can develop navigation skills, including map reading and compass use, while gaining a deeper understanding of the surrounding landscape. The experience promotes resilience, leadership, and confidence, all while creating memorable shared experiences.
With a strong focus on safety and the task at hand, ridge scrambling offers both physical challenge and a powerful sense of achievement.
